Smoothing your scar
Scar massage for a lumpy, raised, hypertrophic scar
After your 6-8 week check with your GP you can start getting hands-on with you scar. These direct techniques can help if your scar appears lumpy or has raised hypertrophic areas.
Fix & Spread
This technique is great for scars which are raised or lumpy. The compress and stretching action can help improve the flexibility in the scar tissue itself.
Pop a small amount of scar cream on your scar
Place the fingertips of both index fingers next to each other on one end of your scar
Keeping the pressure consistent, run one finger 2-3cm along your scar
Now lift the fixed finger up to meet the one that moved and repeat again
Do this all the way along your scar
Lift & Roll
This pinch and shear motion helps to free up the adhesions between the different layers of the skin and fascia which can make your scar appear lumpy.
Pinch the scar between your finger and thumb and gently lift it
Now roll the scar between your fingers for 5-10 seconds
Move along to the next bit and repeat until you've lifted and rolled the whole scar
Zig-Zagging
This technique is mildly abrasive so its best not to use on your scar if it's keloid (if you're unsure, send us a message and we can help you). It's great for smoothing and if you notice at either end of the scar where the stitches began/ended some raised parts, spend a bit longer using this technique on them.
Fix your scar at one end
With the other hand, make quick, light, zig-zag movements across the scar
This technique should be quick movements and quite light pressure - as if you were rubbing something out.
Other ways to Flatten / Smooth your Scar
Silicone Sheets can help soften and flatten a scar. They can also help relieve itching and discomfort. They need to be used for a minimum of 3 months so we recommend using a thicker silicone patch which is less likely to lose its efficacy in that time
Compression from a bellyband can be helpful.
Medical grade moisturisers contain active ingredients shown to soften the scar and actively reduce the scars appearance
Laser therapy can help minimise scar tissue formation by improving blood supply to the area - contact us if you'd like to explore that treament.
